Feeding small-breed puppies the right way

Feeding small-breed puppies the right way

Pomeranian puppies have tiny stomachs and fast metabolisms. A skipped meal is not a diet. In a very small puppy it can become low blood sugar, weakness, and an emergency. Feeding well is less about premium branding and more about rhythm: the same food, the same clock, the same measured amount, and water that is always there.

What we send home

We start puppies on a named small-breed puppy kibble and we send a sample with the go-home bag. Keep that food for at least two weeks. If you change brands later, mix slowly over several days. Measure with a kitchen scale, not a giant scoop meant for a Labrador. Write the grams on the bin. If two people feed, they must use the same number. A Pomeranian can look “fine” while quietly gaining a pound that will sit on small joints.

A daily clock

Three meals a day until about six months, then two. Morning, mid-afternoon, and evening works for most households. After each meal, go out. Do not free-feed a whole day’s kibble in a bowl and hope. Free-feeding hides a puppy who has stopped eating, which is information you need. If a meal is refused, note the time and try again in an hour. If two meals are refused, or the puppy becomes quiet and wobbly, call the veterinarian.

Treats and table scraps

Training treats should be pea-sized. Cheese, chicken skin, and “just a bite” of dinner add up faster than people think. If the waist disappears, cut treats first, not breakfast. Puzzle feeders can slow a gulp-y eater and give a bored brain a job. Avoid xylitol, grapes, raisins, onions, and cooked bones. If you want to use fresh food, ask your veterinarian for a balanced plan. Do not invent a homemade diet from social media for an eight-week-old toy breed.

Water and hypoglycemia

Fresh water always. Travel days need extra attention: a small meal before a long gap is safer than an empty stomach. If a young puppy becomes wobbly, weak, or glassy-eyed, rub a little honey on the gums and go to the clinic. Call us at +1 743-259-3337 after you have started that help. We would rather get a scared message than a late one.

Weight is a weekly habit. Use the same scale. Feel the ribs under the coat; a Pomeranian can hide condition in fur. Growing puppies should gain steadily, not balloon. Adults should keep a waist you can see from above. Food is part of the health packet we send, and it is part of the life you are buying when you order a puppy on WhatsApp or email.
