Living well with a Pom

Pomeranian care guide

A compact dog still needs a full plan: coat, calories, teeth, and companionship.

This guide is the same conversation we have on go-home day. A compact dog still needs a full plan. If you only remember four things, remember these: brush to the skin, feed on a clock, keep the waist, and give the dog a person. Everything else is detail.

Coat, bath, and the first professional groom

Line-brush in sections with a slicker, then prove your work with a metal comb. Pay attention behind the ears, in the pants, under the collar, and in the armpits. A bath is useful only if the coat is fully dried to the skin with a high-velocity dryer. Damp undercoat is how mats start. Book a groomer who knows spitz breeds every six to eight weeks for a sanitary trim, nails, and a proper dry. Do not shave a healthy Pomeranian down for summer. You can ruin texture and sun protection for a long time.

Food, treats, and low blood sugar

Three measured meals a day until about six months, then two. Use the kibble we send home for at least two weeks before any slow transition. Weigh portions. Cheese, table scraps, and giant training biscuits add up on a six-pound body. If a young puppy becomes wobbly, weak, or glassy-eyed, rub a little honey on the gums and call your veterinarian. That is an emergency, not a wait-and-see moment.

Rest, noise, and manners

Pomeranians are intelligent and can become barky when they are bored or underslept. A covered crate or a quiet pen is not unkind. It is how a small dog learns that the house has an off switch. Keep training sessions to two or three minutes. Reward a sit, a wait, and four paws on the floor. Give them a job: a puzzle feeder, a short trick, or simply following you from room to room with a purpose.

They are small. Watch stairs, larger dogs, and children who may drop them. Use a harness on walks. Do not leave a puppy unattended with strings, xylitol gum, or open water buckets. If you want us to walk through your setup before pickup, call +1 743-259-3337 or send a photo of the crate corner on WhatsApp.
