How to care for a Pomeranian double coat

How to care for a Pomeranian double coat

A Pomeranian coat is a weather shield. The undercoat is dense and insulating. The guard coat is longer and sheds water and dirt when it is healthy. Together they make the halo people fall in love with. Neglected, the same coat mats at the skin, pulls, and hides moisture. Grooming is not vanity. It is how a double coat stays a coat instead of a felted jacket.

Tools that actually work

You need a slicker brush for the body, a metal comb to prove you reached the skin, a pin brush for finishing, and a high-velocity dryer after baths. A human hairbrush and a bath towel will not do this job. Keep a spray bottle of water or a light coat mist so you are not ripping a dry undercoat. Work in sections: shoulder, rib, pants, tail, chest, behind the ears. If the comb snags, go back to the slicker. If the comb passes, you are done with that section.

The rule we repeat

If the comb does not pass to the skin, you are not finished. Line-brush. Lift a layer, brush the layer below, and only then move on. Never shave a healthy Pom coat for convenience. Shaving can ruin texture, reduce sun protection, and leave a coat that grows back patchy. Medical shaves are a veterinarian decision. Fashion shaves are how people end up with a lion cut and a lifetime of regret.

Baths and drying

Bathe when the coat is dirty or before a professional groom, not because the calendar says so. Use a gentle dog shampoo. Rinse until your hands feel no slip. Then dry to the skin. A damp undercoat is a mat factory. A high-velocity dryer, used with patience and a hand on the coat, is the difference between a cloud and a compact of wet wool. Keep the air moving and the puppy’s face comfortable. Stop if the puppy overheats.

Puppy coat to adult coat

The fluffy puppy coat will blow as the adult coat comes in. This is the season that surprises new families. Hair will come out in handfuls. Mats will form overnight behind the ears if you skip two days. Book a groomer who knows spitz breeds before you are already in trouble. Ask them to teach you the section you always miss. Between visits, you still own the comb test.

Sanitary trims, paw pads, and nails belong on a regular schedule, usually every six to eight weeks. Eyes may tear; wipe them daily if needed so the facial hair does not stain and mat. If you want a demonstration on your own puppy before you leave our kitchen, say so on go-home day. We would rather watch you brush once than hear about a shaved coat in month four.
